No wind is favorable when the boat is not prepared for it. And often what separates safe sailing from an unexpected mid-crossing is rigging.
A rig check isn’t just good practice: it’s a guarantee that everything is working as it should and an essential check before loosening ties.
WEAR AND TEAR IS INEVITABLE, BUT IT CAN BE CONTROLLED
On the surface, everything may seem fine. But the marine environment is unforgiving: salt, humidity, sun and constant stress silently wear down every component. Oxidized terminals, slack in the turnbuckles or frayed cables – many of these signs are invisible to the untrained eye.
Only a specialized eye can detect the details that make the difference. The BBDouro Boat Services team carries out a complete check-up, allowing you to correct what is wearing out before it becomes a serious problem, the kind that jeopardizes the outing, the season… or the Mast.
WHEN TO DO IT?
When the Rigging is properly adjusted, performance improves and allows you to enjoy sailing with peace of mind. The mast works in line, the sails maintain their ideal shape, the rudder response is more precise and each maneuver becomes faster.
Ideally, a rigging check-up should be carried out once a year, preferably before the start of the sailing season. If the boat has been idle over the winter, or if it has taken part in intense races or more demanding crossings, this check becomes even more important. It should also be done whenever abnormal signs are detected, such as looseness, strange noises, difficulty in maneuvering or changes in the boat’s sailing behavior.
If in doubt, don’t risk it. It’s better to inspect and make sure everything is in order than to compromise safety on board.
