Sailing is an unforgettable experience, but before you take the helm, the first step is to obtain a recreational boating license that matches the type of boat and the waters you plan to explore. In Portugal, there are four types of recreational boating licenses: Marinheiro, Patrão Local, Patrão de Costa, and Patrão de Alto Mar.
In this article, we’ll explore the differences between Marinheiro, Patrão Local, and Patrão de Costa, and show you how you can prepare to obtain your license with BBDouro Nautical Experiences.
MARINHEIRO: The First Step into the World of Sailing
The Marinheiro License is perfect for those new to navigation, enabling the holder to command recreational vessels during the day, up to 3 miles from the coast and 10 miles from a safe harbor, within the following limits:
– For those aged 16 to 18, it allows the operation of recreational vessels up to 6 meters in length, with a maximum installed power of 30 HP;
– From the age of 18, it enables the holder to command recreational vessels up to 12 meters in length, with installed power appropriate to their certification.
Requirements:
- Minimum age: 16 years old;
- Ability to swim;
- Parental consent for minors under 18 years old;
- Physical and mental fitness for recreational boating, proven by a medical certificate;
- Completion of a course and approval by a training entity for recreational boaters accredited by the DGRM.
PATRÃO LOCAL: FREEDOM TO EXPLORE MORE
If you’re looking to sail with more freedom while still staying safe near the coast, the Patrão Local License is your perfect option. It lets you command recreational boats with no limits on size or power, as long as you’re within 6 miles of the coast and 25 miles from a safe harbor.
Requirements:
- Minimum age: 18 years old;
- Ability to swim;
- Physical and mental fitness for recreational boating, proven by a medical certificate;
- Completion of a course and approval by a training entity for recreational boaters accredited by the DGRM.
- You don’t need to have the Marinheiro license to get the Patrão Local license.
PATRÃO DE COSTA: FOR THE REAL ADVENTURERS
The Patrão de Costa License is perfect for those ready to take on more challenging and long-distance journeys. With this license, you can sail up to 45 miles from the coast, with no distance limit from a safe harbor.
Requirements:
- Minimum age: 18 years old;
- Ability to swim;
- Physical and mental fitness for recreational boating, proven by a medical certificate;
- You must hold the Patrão Local License;
- Completion of a course and approval by a training entity for recreational boaters accredited by the DGRM.
HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT BOATING LICENSE FOR YOU?
The right choice depends on your goals. If you just want to enjoy occasional day trips in calm waters, the Marinheiro License will be enough. If you’re looking to take longer coastal trips, the Patrão Local gives you more freedom. For those ready to take on the open sea and explore further destinations, the Patrão de Costa is the way to go.
Make sure to also think about the type of boat you want to command and the areas you’d love to explore.
