Douro in celebration, tradition at the rudder!
The wind blew gently across the Douro River on the morning of June 24, marking the start of another edition of the emblematic Rabelo Boat Race. This is a unique regatta in the world, which celebrates Port wine and is the only day of the year when rabelo boats sail in healthy competition.
A RIVER WITH HISTORY
For centuries, the rabelo boats were the great masters of the Douro. With their flat bottoms and imposing sails, they transported barrels of Port wine from the Upper Douro to the cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia. Today, they no longer transport wine, but they continue to preserve a legacy: since 1983, every year on June 24th, we have celebrated this memory with a regatta that is as much a part of Porto as the brands that represent it.
EMOTION AT ITS PEAK
At midday, the starting signal sounded and the Rabelos came to life. From the Douro Marina to the D. Luís I Bridge, 14 boats and their crews gave their all along the route, where strategy, strength and tradition intersected. This year, the regatta reached its 41st edition, already a living heritage of the city, offering a beautiful spectacle that filled the banks and once again honored the tradition of this day.
OFFLEY'S VICTORY
With the tide in favor, it was Offley’s rabelo that stood out, mastering the waters and crossing the finish line in first place – a fair victory that celebrated not only the crew’s technique, but also the history of a century-old brand. The team’s enthusiasm was contagious, with applause echoing around the shores and toasts with Port wine marking the end of the race.

BBDOURO: THE BACKSTAGE THAT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE
Once again, BBDouro Nautical Experiences was behind the show, guaranteeing logistics, safety and technical support to the organization.
As a company that lives the river every day, we believe in the power of traditions to unite generations and bring the city to life. We were there behind the scenes to ensure that everything ran with the professionalism and passion that define us.
If you’ve never seen a rabelo regatta live, mark your calendar: June 24, 2026. Because there are experiences that can’t fit on a screen – like the sound of sails in the wind, the brilliance of the Douro on a festive day or the thrill of seeing an entire city cheering on boats that are living history. See you next year!
