After a winter out of action (on the water or in the dry), there’s nothing like getting back to sailing. But before starting the season, it’s essential to carry out some fundamental checks to ensure that your boat is safe and in perfect condition.
At BBDouro Boat Services, we help owners and boating enthusiasts with complete maintenance and repair services.
Whether you’re an experienced skipper or a weekend sailor, here’s what you should check before taking your boat out again after the winter season:
1. engine - the heart of the boat
Start by checking the oil and coolant (for inboard engines). An oil change is recommended before using the boat again.
Inspect the impeller, hoses and clamps to ensure that there are no traces of corrosion or rust spots. Also make sure that the water pump is working properly. If it hasn’t been replaced recently, now might be the right time.
If possible, test the starter dry, out of the water, using a suitable cooling system, to avoid surprises.

2. Fuel System - Clean and Dry
During the winter (or long periods of inactivity), the fuel can accumulate water or impurities. Empty the water separators, inspect the supply hoses and clean or replace the filters if necessary.
3. Battery - Guaranteed Power
Test the battery (it should have more than 12.4V), clean the terminals and apply anti-corrosion spray. If it is weak, replace it.
4. Hull and Propulsion - Visual Check
Look for cracks, osmosis bubbles or peeling areas on the hull. Take the opportunity to clean the hull with fresh water and check that the antifouling is in good condition; if necessary, apply a new layer. Check the propeller, rudder and flaps; any damaged or warped parts should be replaced.
5. Electrical System and Electronics
Turn everything on: navigation lights, GPS, VHF, sounder… Check the cables, fuses and connections. Test each device and, if necessary, synchronize or update the electronic systems. Don’t forget to also test the bilge pumps, the fresh water pump, the appliances on board and the toilet pumps. A faulty bilge pump can be disastrous in the event of water ingress.
6. Safety Equipment - Legal Compliance
Check the expiry date and number of vests, extinguishers and flares. Check that the first aid kit and signaling equipment are complete.
7. Documentation
Make sure your insurance, navigation license and registration are up to date. Keep a digital copy on your phone.
8. Mooring and anchoring
Check cables, fenders, chain and winch. These are details that make a difference.
