The streets of the historic fishing village of Afurada were transformed into a veritable stage of celebration with the parade of sailors taking part in the 29er Porto 2025 World Championship on the eve of the start of the competition. More than 400 young sailors from 26 countries vibrantly marked the official opening of the event, which culminated with the raising of the flags at the Douro Marina in Vila Nova de Gaia.
The parade involved the local community in a spectacle of color, music and lots of entertainment. The young sailors, aged between 15 and 20, paraded proudly with the flags of their respective countries, to the sound of the “Funk You Brass Band”, creating a festive atmosphere that stretched along the Vila Nova de Gaia waterfront, between Afurada and the Douro Marina. The opening ceremony was marked not only by its sporting symbolism, but also by the involvement of the community, which took to the streets to welcome the young sailors with enthusiasm and hospitality.
The 29er Porto 2025 World Championship promises to be one of the most exciting events in the history of this class. The organization is the responsibility of BBDouro Nautical Experiences and has the support of the municipalities of Porto, Vila Nova de Gaia and Matosinhos. The 29er is considered the youngest and most dynamic boat in competitive sailing, having been designed as a transition class to the Olympic 49er and 49er FX.
Start of the Championship
The qualifying regattas start this Sunday at 12 noon and will take place between the port of Leixões and Salgueiros beach, covering the three municipalities on Porto’s Atlantic coast. Alongside the sporting activities, the event will also involve workshops, lectures and actions linked to sustainability.
