It was the most fun Easter ever!
We couldn’t be happier to have welcomed another group of young sailors to our 2023 Easter Sailing Camp. Teaching children to sail is one of the activities that gives us the most pleasure!
It was an intensive week of sailing in the Douro estuary nature reserve, where there was no shortage of fun and lots of swimming, always under the watchful eye of our monitors!
We started the week with sun, warmth and a lesson where our little sailors learned all the theory of sailing:
- how do you sail upwind, beam reach and downwind?
- what is budgeting and arribar?
- and how do you operate the sails?
They also learned about the rudder, Centreboard, Mast, Boom and other parts of the boat. And they practiced the figure-of-eight knot, the right-hand knot and the most challenging of all: the bowline.
Every day, before going out on the water, the usual ritual: putting on vests, dividing the group into the various boats and preparing them for the water.
As the days progressed, the weather darkened and gave way to rain and wind, but even that didn’t deter these brave sailors!
Our monitors were prepared for any kind of situation and took advantage of the less favorable periods for sailing to carry out other activities:
- cleaning the reserve beach;
- a motorboat ride to the Freixo bridge;
- nautical challenges where they had to show off their knowledge of knots, tides and boat parts.
On the last day, everyone received their diploma and we are sure that the sea bug has taken root in all these new little sailors.
