An unforgettable morning on the water!
At BBDouro Nautical Experiences, we believe that it’s never too late to start something new. And on March 29th, the Douro was filled with excitement with the long-awaited Open Day of the Adult Academy, an experience designed for all those who have always wanted to take their first steps in sailing or experience a new adventure.
Originally scheduled for an earlier date, the Open Day had to be postponed due to adverse weather conditions — because for us, safety and the quality of the experience always come first. And it was worth the wait! The morning of the event brought the perfect conditions to welcome 80 participants, eager to discover the sport that we are so passionate about.

The event had a strong focus on safety and learning, promoting sailing as an accessible and fun sport for all ages. The journey began on land, with a theoretical introduction where the future sailors learned the basics of sailing. Then came the most eagerly awaited moment: the first practical sailing lesson on the Douro River. On board our small Sail-boats and with the support of our instructors, each participant felt the rudder in their hands, the wind in their sails and the thrill of sailing.
None of this would have been possible without the dedication and passion of the BBDouro team, who were involved in every phase of the event. From the preparations to the final moment when the participants returned to land, our team worked tirelessly to provide a safe and memorable experience for everyone, ensuring that each person felt welcomed and, above all, confident to embark on their first adventure with us.
“Taking part in the Adult Sailing Academy Open Day was an incredible experience! I’ve always wanted to have this experience and I was able to make it happen with this BBDouro open day. I was warmly welcomed by the team, who showed great professionalism and passion for the sport.
During the event, I had the opportunity to learn the basic theoretical fundamentals of sailing at the BBDouro facilities with Hugo, the instructor who showed a lot of experience and attention to the beginners. The practical lessons took place on the Douro River and were very exciting. Matilde was the skipper who accompanied us and she showed herself to be qualified and encouraging towards the “aspiring sailors”.
This event was also a good opportunity to meet other people with similar interests, which made the experience even more enjoyable. I would recommend the BBDouro Sailing Academy to any adult who wants to explore the world of sailing, whether as a hobby or to develop new skills. The Open Day was, for me, just the start of a learning experience that I hope to continue!”
