On June 6th, the Douro Marina was transformed into a sea of discovery and adventure.
The Junior Open Day of the BBDouro Nautical Experiences Sailing Academy challenged more than 40 children and young people to get out of their routine and set sail on a morning entirely dedicated to the world of sailing.
Before jumping into the water, the participants had to demonstrate their skills on land. Along a course made up of seven educational stations, they acquired the essential knowledge to take their first steps as sailors.

SEVEN SEASONS TO DISCOVER SAILING
To ensure a transition from theory to practice, learning was organized into different stations. The Douro Marina gave way to a dynamic and interactive course, where participants were challenged to explore various areas of sailing:
- Wind season: they learned to identify where the wind blows from.
- Seamanship station: they discovered the three types of sailing seamanship – upwind, beam reach and downwind.
- Boat parts station: they learned the names and functions of components such as the mast, rudder, sail and boom.
- Ecology station: they talked about the importance of preserving the oceans and took part in a small beach clean-up near the Douro Marina.
- Simulator station: they practiced their first sailing maneuvers on dry land, such as tacking and tacking.
- Sailing baptism station: they boarded boats from the BBDouro Nautical Experiences Junior Academy and sailed for the first time, with the support of our students and instructors.
- Fun Zone: they unloaded the rest of their energy on an inflatable and with face painting.

THE COURSE IS ALREADY SET
For many of the participants, this was the start of a new passion. And for those who couldn’t guarantee their presence at the Open Day, the adventure is far from over.
The compass now points to the Summer Sailing Camp, which kicks off on June 22. It will be weeks full of experiences at sea, new friendships and lots of sailing lessons.
The challenge is on: who will join us on board this summer?
